Degrees and Certifications:
Hello my name is Matthew South and I am thrilled to be here at SCCA this year. I will be teaching 7th, 8th and 9th grade Mathematics. I grew up in, and still live here in Porterville. I attended Monache High School and then UC Merced where I was part of the first graduating class in 2009. I was not sure what I wanted to do with my life after graduating, but I knew I needed to be somewhere I could make a difference.
In 2010 I got a job as a teacher for the Tule River Education Department. I quickly fell in with love with teaching, and realized the classroom was the place where I needed to be to make the difference I needed to make. Students are the creators and innovators of tomorrow.
I have had the opportunity to teach a variety of subjects to students of all ages and have ran many clubs, workshops and activities. I realized that students of all ages and interests learn best when they feel their teacher cares and is invested in them. Teaching is not about talking in front of a class. Teaching is about building relationships with students, fostering their curiosity for the world around them, and then giving them the tools to find unique solutions to the challenges they will face in the real world for the rest of their lives.
I am certain this year will be incredible.
