Jim Maples Academy believes all students can learn and is focused on helping students believe in their intelligence and ability. A mindset is a person’s set of beliefs about their own potential. A person can have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset, and their mindset impacts achievement. Students with a fixed mindset believe that they were born with their intelligence and that it cannot be changed. These students avoid challenges, give up easily, see effort as pointless, avoid useful negative feedback, and feel threatened by the success of others. Students with a growth mindset believe that intelligence can be developed. These students embrace challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, see effort as the path to mastery, learn from feedback, and find inspiration in the success of others. Teachers are helping foster growth mindsets by being mindful of their own mindsets and the messages they send with their thinking and actions, praising the learning process and not just the product, and modeling learning from failure. JMA is starting a mindset revolution!
